He worked for universities, NHS Departments, private clinics, and community organisations. Born in Merseyside, he was educated in London, Israel, Texas, Germany, Italy, Israel, and Oxford. His initial academic passion was philosophy: especially German philosophy. His interest in psychoanalysis began whilst he was a research fellow at Oxford in the 1970s and '80s. After much analysis and clinical training he returned to Liverpool in 1990 for clinical work. Following two decades in NHS he became professional lead in psychotherapy.
